The ninth Nihon Matsuri, the largest celebration of Japanese culture in Paraguay, will take place on Saturday, 24 October, at the grounds of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee in Luque. Organisers expect around 15,000 visitors.12
This edition closes a year of events for the 90th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Paraguay. The first organised group of settlers founded the La Colmena colony in Paraguarí in 1936. Today about 10,000 people of Japanese origin live in the country.23

The headline act is Hanafugetsu, a trio formed by Yuko Suzuhana, Daisuke Kaminaga and Kiyoshi Ibukuro, former members of Wagakki Band, joined by koto player Yoshiaki Okawa. The programme also includes Japan Bunka Taiko drummers, yosakoi dancers and Bon Odori circle dances that visitors can join.1
On the plate
More than 80 stalls will sell ramen, yakisoba, sushi, takoyaki, gyoza, okonomiyaki and Japanese desserts, and visitors can try on yukata and happi coats. The festival is organised by the Japanese Association of Asunción and has been declared of national tourist interest.1
