The second edition of the Words and Sound festival brought writers, musicians and artists to the Port Cultural Centre in Asunción, with workshops, talks, book and vinyl fairs and live performances. A storm hit the city towards the end of the event, but the programme carried on to the finish.1

Argentine novelist Agustina Bazterrica was one of the main guests and drew a packed room for one of the final conversations on 3 October.1

Crafts at the door

Visitors were greeted by a fair of Paraguayan handicrafts run by vendors from La Recova, who are working from the Port while their usual site is restored. Stalls sold pieces made with traditional techniques such as encaje ju, ñandutí lace and ao po'i embroidery.1

Independent publishers and local bookshops filled the first floor, the Asu Lee reading club held two group sessions, and collectors brought thousands of records, CDs and cassettes to the vinyl fair.1
